This lesson focuses on the ways that Illinois has changed over time, through a series of important events that caused these changes. Students will be able to relate cause and effect relationships to Illinois history.
Each student will need a copy of the article, Illinois: A Growing and Changing State. Additionally, they will need 2 different colors of highlighters (or markers/crayons) to identify the causes and effects throughout the article. An annotated copy of the article is available for teacher reference.
This article could be read multiple times, in whole group or small group instruction, but it is important that the teacher monitor that students are correctly identifying the cause and effect historical relationships throughout.
In the second Cause and Effect Lesson, these relationships will be reinforced.
DSS is a standards-based Social Studies Curriculum for 4th Grade Educators in Illinois.
