Students can first explore the reference section of their textbook, which features many different types of maps. This can be found on pages GH6 - GH18 of Illinois and Our Nation, Volume 2.
Then, students can read this short article about the 6 different types of maps.
After the reading, students will complete the Interactive Journal Page on Types of Maps. The sorting of the pictures to match each type could be used as a quick assessment. Students will glue down the Types of Maps Foldables (2 strips of 3). They will glue down the maps that correspond with each type of map. Finally, they will add definitions under each flap.
There is also a quick check worksheet, asking the students to use their new map identification skills. This could be used for a grade, for homework or as guided practice. An Answer Key for this worksheet is available here.
DSS is a standards-based Social Studies Curriculum for 4th Grade Educators in Illinois.
