Changing Laws in Illinois

In this lesson, students will explore how laws change over time, specifically in Illinois.  First, students will read a short article about what laws are and why they have to be changed and updated in a modern world.

After reading this article, students will be able to play a game called "Then and Now." This game consists of cards that show the transformation of Illinois laws over time. There are ten categories of laws included, but the teacher is free to use any number of card sets for their game.  Students work to arrange the cards in the correct order to show how the laws have become the most modern in response to a changing world.

While playing the game, students will be able to fill in an interactive journal page.  This activity allows a place for students to summarize the reasons why specific laws have changed over time.

After the article is read and the game and interactive pages are completed, students can take a 5-question Quick Check on the changing laws of Illinois.  An Answer Key is also available.
