Students will first read the article The Three Levels of Government which describes the important information about the jobs and responsibilities that are classified within Federal, State and Local jurisdictions.
After or during the reading (depending on how the teacher chooses), students will complete the Interactive Journal Pages for the 3 Levels of Government. Students will likely use three pages of their notebook to complete this. Students will only be gluing and writing about the jobs of each official. In the next lesson about specific people, students will add photographs and fun facts. Please see the Interactive Journal reference slide for a model.
There is also a Quick Check asking the students to recall what they learned about the levels of government, as well as classify the jobs and responsibilities of these government officials. This could be used for a grade, for homework or as guided practice. An Answer Key for this worksheet is also available.
DSS is a standards-based Social Studies Curriculum for 4th Grade Educators in Illinois.
